The short version

Bulova's August 2025 Surveyor swaps the leather strap for a bracelet and gives the case sharper bevels, keeping the price under £300.

A first look built from brand specs and public owner feedback. We have not worn this watch. How we rate · Updated

What is new about the Surveyor 96B470?

The Surveyor is Bulova's entry-level automatic line, a classic three-hand watch with a date and a sapphire crystal. Bulova has sold 39 mm Surveyors for a few years, mostly on leather straps, such as the pistachio-dial 96B427 that Watchonista lists as a 2024 model. The 96B470 is one of a newer pair on a steel bracelet. Bulova's Australian store tags it as an August 2025 release, and its light blue twin is the 96B469.

Two things set it apart from the earlier 39 mm models. First, Bulova describes the case as having bevelled edges and faceting, with a mix of polished and brushed surfaces. Second, it comes on a three-link stainless steel bracelet with a push-button deployant clasp and latched quick-release spring bars, so swapping to a leather strap for evenings takes seconds rather than a tool kit.

The dial is a radiant brown with a sunburst finish, silver-tone accents, cutout minute markers and lumed hands. A magnifier sits over the date. Brown sunburst dials have become a popular alternative to blue and black, and this one should shift from chocolate to bronze as the light changes.

How big is it, and how will it wear?

Bulova gives a 39 mm case width and a 20 mm lug width. That is the sweet spot for a modern dress watch: big enough to read easily, small enough to slide under a shirt cuff. Masters in Time lists the 96B470 at 12 mm thick, and Long Island Watch measures the light blue 96B469 at 11.8 mm thick and 45.8 mm lug to lug. If those figures carry over, it will suit wrists from about 6 to 7.5 inches.

On the bracelet it will feel more substantial than a strap-mounted dress watch. Long Island Watch quotes 160 grams for the 96B469 on its bracelet, which is a fair weight for 39 mm. The 20 mm lugs make strap changes easy if you prefer leather.

What movement does it use, and how accurate is it?

Bulova describes an automatic movement with 21 jewels and a 42-hour power reserve, visible through an exhibition caseback. It does not name the calibre on its product pages, but Masters in Time lists the Miyota 8215 for the 96B470, and Long Island Watch gives the same calibre for the 96B469. The 8215 is a long-running, simple Japanese workhorse that any watchmaker can service.

Bulova does not publish an accuracy figure for this watch, so we have not quoted one. Expect the everyday accuracy of an entry-level mechanical movement rather than the precision of Bulova's own high-frequency Precisionist quartz. The 8215 also has a sweeping seconds hand that ticks at six beats a second, which looks smoother than quartz but is not as smooth as more expensive automatics.

How well is it built?

For £299 the materials are good. Bulova lists stainless steel for the case and bracelet and a flat sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, which is still not a given at this price. The clasp has push buttons and the bracelet uses latched spring bars, both small touches that make it nicer to live with.

Water resistance is the weak spot. Bulova's UK and global pages describe the 96B470 only as splash resistant, while Long Island Watch lists 30 m for the light blue twin. Either way, treat it as a watch to keep away from the pool and to take off before the washing up.

Is it good value against its rivals?

The RRP is £299 on Bulova's UK site. The obvious rival is the Orient Bambino 40.5 mm RA-AC0024L, which has an RRP of £284.99, an in-house Orient automatic movement and a more traditional domed look, but comes on leather rather than a bracelet. The Timex Marlin Automatic TW2W93100 costs less, with an RRP of £240, and leans further into 1960s styling.

Against both, the Bulova makes its case with sapphire, a bracelet with a proper deployant clasp and quick-release bars. If you want one automatic that works with a suit on Monday and a T-shirt on Saturday, that bracelet is worth the small premium.

What is the catch?

The low water resistance is the main one, and it limits the 96B470 to dry, everyday use. The Miyota movement is reliable but basic, with a 42-hour reserve that will run down over a weekend off the wrist. Bulova also does not publish thickness, lug to lug or the calibre on its own pages, so you have to rely on retailers for those details.

This colour is also new enough that we found little owner feedback yet. With a reworked, bevelled case, long-term reports on the bracelet and the finishing are still to come.

“Sapphire, a quick-release bracelet and a brown sunburst dial for under £300: the Surveyor does the basics well.”
