What is the Spitfire Lock Chronograph Bethlem?

The Spitfire Lock Chronograph is one of AVI-8's longest-running Spitfire models. AVI-8 says it takes its name from Eric Lock, one of the RAF's most successful pilots of the Battle of Britain. The Bethlem, reference AV-4089-0B, is a version made in partnership with Imperial War Museums (IWM). aBlogtoWatch reported it on sale from 6 September 2024, alongside three other IWM editions: the Hawker Hurricane Carey Dual Time, the P-51 Mustang Blakeslee Chronograph and the Hawker Hurricane Classic Chronograph.

The name comes from IWM's history: its London museum has been housed since 1936 in the former Bethlem Royal Hospital building. AVI-8 says the partnership celebrates IWM's work collecting the stories and objects that show people's experience of war. aBlogtoWatch notes an IWM logo on the caseback.

The design is classic Spitfire Lock. The dial takes cues from Spitfire cockpit gauges, with raised numerals and indices, two inset sub-dials in a bi-compax layout and a recessed date window. On the Bethlem the dial is white and the strap black leather.

How big is it, and how will it wear?

AVI-8 lists the case at 42 mm across, 12 mm thick and 50 mm lug to lug, with a weight of 90 g. That is a mid-sized pilot's chronograph. The 50 mm lug span will suit wrists from roughly 17 cm upwards; on smaller wrists the lugs may overhang. aBlogtoWatch describes curved lugs angled downward, which should help it sit closer to the wrist than the numbers suggest.

The strap is black genuine leather, tapering from 22 mm at the lugs to 18 mm at the buckle, according to AVI-8. aBlogtoWatch notes white stitching and that, unlike many pilot's watches, it has no steel rivets.

What movement does it use, and how accurate is it?

AVI-8 lists a Japanese meca-quartz chronograph movement but does not name the calibre. Meca-quartz is a hybrid: the timekeeping is quartz, so accuracy is far better than any affordable automatic, while the chronograph uses a mechanical module, which gives the pushers a crisper feel and lets the seconds hand snap back to zero. Oracle of Time, reviewing an earlier Spitfire Lock with the same kind of movement, noted a flyback-style reset and readings to a fifth of a second. A battery change every few years is the only maintenance you should expect.

How well is it built?

The case is stainless steel. AVI-8 lists a mineral crystal and aBlogtoWatch describes it as domed with a blue anti-reflective coating. Lume is Swiss Newlite on the applied indices, which aBlogtoWatch says is readable but not especially bright. Water resistance is 5 ATM (50 m), fine for rain and hand washing but not for swimming with a leather strap. AVI-8 gives a two-year international warranty.

The pushers are a highlight on the Spitfire Lock: Oracle of Time described them as shaped to imitate Spitfire wings, and said the case feels solid and weighty for the price.

Is it good value against its rivals?

AVI-8's UK site lists the Bethlem at £229, which is less than the £238 listed for most standard Spitfire Lock colours. AVI-8 often discounts heavily, so the RRP is a ceiling rather than what most people pay.

Within AVI-8's own range, the Bell X-1 Machbuster Chronograph is £274 with a similar meca-quartz approach and a more modern, test-pilot design. Outside the brand, the Rotary Apex100 Chronograph is £279 and brings a sapphire crystal, which the AVI-8 lacks. The Bethlem's appeal is the IWM connection and a dial that leans hard into wartime aviation.

What is the catch?

Mineral glass is the main compromise: it scratches more easily than sapphire, and on a domed crystal scratches can show. The dial is busy, with raised numerals, two sub-dials and a date window, so it will not double as a dress watch. Public owner feedback specific to this edition is thin, so there is little long-term evidence yet beyond reviews of the standard Spitfire Lock.

“A museum special edition priced below most of the standard range is a rare thing in watches.”
