Galaxy Watch9 brighter and slimmer, but still a daily charge
The Samsung Galaxy Watch9 44mm is a £379 RRP Wear OS smartwatch with a faster Snapdragon chip, a brighter AMOLED screen and Samsung's broadest health tracking yet. It suits Android phone owners, particularly Galaxy users, who want a full smartwatch they can wear to bed. The catch is battery: Samsung quotes up to 40 hours, so plan on daily charging.

The short version
Samsung's 2026 everyday smartwatch gets a new chip, a brighter screen and a lighter band, at £30 more than last year. Here is what the published specs say about the 44 mm model.
What is new about the Galaxy Watch9?
Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Watch9 at Galaxy Unpacked in London on 22 July 2026, alongside the Galaxy Watch Ultra2, and it went on sale on 7 August. The UK RRP is £349 for the 40 mm model and £379 for the 44 mm, about £30 more than the Galaxy Watch8.
The biggest hardware change is the move to Qualcomm's Snapdragon Wear Elite platform, a penta-core chip running at up to 2.1 GHz, with 2 GB of memory and 32 GB of storage. Peak screen brightness rises to 3,000 nits, which should help outdoors. The band has been redesigned with a new air pocket structure that Samsung says fits more securely for all-day and overnight wear.
The software side brings a reorganised Samsung Health built around activity, mindfulness, nutrition, sleep and vitals. New features include a Heart Health Score that combines activity, sleep, body composition and stress trends, a Fitness Index that checks whether your exercise volume suits your fitness, and Daily Cardio Load to guide recovery. Overnight Vitals pulls heart rate, heart rate variability, respiratory rate, skin temperature and blood oxygen into one view.
How big is it, and how will it wear?
Samsung lists the 44 mm model at 46.0 x 43.7 x 8.6 mm and 34 g without the band. The 46 mm height is effectively its lug-to-lug length, which is short for a 44 mm watch and should suit average wrists from about 16 cm upwards. Smaller wrists will be better served by the 40 mm version.
At 8.6 mm thick by Samsung's measurement it is slim for a smartwatch. The Dynamic Lug System and lighter band are designed to keep the sensors in contact with the skin, which matters for the accuracy of overnight readings.
What does the screen and hardware offer?
The 44 mm model has a 1.5-inch Super AMOLED display at 480 x 480 pixels. Sensors include optical heart rate, an electrical heart sensor for ECG, bioelectrical impedance for body composition, a temperature sensor, barometer, gyro, compass and light sensor. Connectivity covers Bluetooth 6.0, dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC for payments and GPS with Glonass, Beidou, Galileo and QZSS. It runs Wear OS powered by Samsung, and Samsung lists security updates until 31 July 2031.
How long does the battery last?
The 44 mm model has a 445 mAh battery. Samsung quotes up to 40 hours with the always-on display off and up to 30 hours with it on. That is a full day and a night of sleep tracking with some margin, not a multi-day watch. If you track sleep, you will need to find a daily charging slot, such as while you shower.
Is it tough enough for swimming and outdoor use?
Samsung rates it at 5 ATM water resistance, which covers swimming in a pool or the sea, and says it has passed MIL-STD-810H tests covering temperature, altitude, humidity, immersion, salt fog, dust, vibration and drops. Samsung's spec sheet does not name the crystal material for this model.
How does it compare with the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 and a Garmin?
The Galaxy Watch Ultra2 costs £649 RRP and is built for outdoor and endurance training, with a 47 mm case and a screen Samsung pushes to 5,000 nits. Unless you need that toughness, the Watch9 gives you the same chip and health platform for £270 less.
The Garmin Forerunner 170 at £259.99 RRP is the alternative if running is the priority. Garmin quotes up to 10 days in smartwatch mode, but it cannot match the Watch9's apps, voice assistant and messaging.
What is the catch?
Battery life is the obvious one. Beyond that, Galaxy watches require an Android phone, and several health features work best with a Samsung Galaxy phone. The price has also crept up, so the 44 mm model now costs £379 RRP before you add LTE.
Who should buy it?
Owners of a recent Galaxy phone who want a smartwatch for notifications, payments and detailed sleep and heart data will get the most from it. If you are upgrading from a Galaxy Watch7 or older, the brighter screen, faster chip and new health scores add up to a meaningful step. If you already wear a Watch8, the gains are smaller.
“The Watch9 is the best case yet for wearing a Samsung to bed, as long as you are happy to charge it every day.”
