Typhoon Baldwin Automatic a cockpit-gauge dial with a sapphire lid

The Hawker Typhoon Baldwin Automatic is a 42 mm pilot's watch with a Japanese automatic movement, a small seconds dial styled on the Typhoon's instrument panel, sapphire crystal and a display case back, at an RRP of £252. It suits aviation fans who want a mechanical watch with a story. The catch: a 15 mm thick case and only 50 m of water resistance.

The short version

AVI-8 has built a regular-production automatic around one RAF pilot and one aircraft, borrowing the Typhoon's gauges for the hands and dial frame and its roundel for the rotor.

What is new about the Typhoon Baldwin Automatic?

AVI-8 names most of its collections after an aircraft and the people who flew it. The Baldwin Automatic joined the Hawker Typhoon family in November 2024, and it honours Wing Commander John Robert Baldwin, whom AVI-8 describes as the top-scoring fighter ace flying the Typhoon in the Second World War. Unlike many recent AVI-8 releases, it is not a limited edition. It is a regular-production model, and the Cool Black version, AV-4119-01, is in stock at AVI-8 UK at the time of writing.

The design idea is the cockpit. AVI-8 says the hands and the frame around the dial are inspired by the Typhoon's instrument panel, and the stitching on the leather strap copies the pattern of the aircraft's seat. Turn it over and there is an exhibition case back with a custom rotor carrying details taken from the Typhoon's RAF roundel.

There are four colours: Cool Black, Burnt Orange, Iron Blue and Dark Khaki. AVI-8 UK lists Cool Black at a regular price of £252 and the other three at £270, and the Dark Khaki version is currently sold out.

How big is it, and how will it wear?

AVI-8 lists a 42.0 mm stainless steel case with a lug to lug of 48.0 mm. That is a sensible footprint for a pilot's watch: the 48 mm length should sit inside the edges of a wrist from about 16.5 cm upwards, which is more forgiving than many big flieger designs.

The numbers to note are the 15.0 mm thickness and the 145 g weight. A 15 mm case will stand tall and will not slide easily under a tight shirt cuff, and 145 g is heavy for a watch on a leather strap. It should feel solid rather than delicate. The strap is 22 mm wide, so replacements are easy to find, and a heavier watch often sits better on a slightly stiffer strap.

What movement does it use, and how accurate is it?

AVI-8 describes the movement as a Japanese automatic with two hands and a small seconds, and it does not name the calibre on its own product page. The retailer Long Island Watch lists it as the Miyota 8245, and the file name of AVI-8's own instruction manual carries the number 8245, which supports that. Miyota is Citizen's movement maker, and the 8200 family is a long-running, easily serviced workhorse.

AVI-8 does not publish an accuracy or power reserve figure for this watch, so we will not quote one. The manual is clear about one practical point: it asks owners to wear the watch for at least eight hours a day to keep it fully wound, and notes that winding by the crown alone may not give the movement enough power. If it will be one of several watches in a rotation, expect to set it again when you pick it up.

How well is it built?

The spec sheet is better than many AVI-8 quartz models at a similar price. The crystal is sapphire, which resists scratches far better than the mineral glass on many of AVI-8's quartz pieces. The applied indices and the hands use Swiss Super-LumiNova, according to AVI-8, so night legibility should be good. The display case back shows the movement and the decorated rotor, which is part of the appeal at this price.

The weak point is water. AVI-8 rates it at 5 ATM, or 50 m, and the crown pulls out rather than screwing down. That is fine for rain and hand washing, but this is not a watch to swim in. AVI-8 offers a two-year international warranty once the watch is registered.

Is it good value against its rivals?

The closest comparison is AVI-8's own Spitfire Type 300 Automatic, launched in 2026. It shares the 42 mm case size and the small seconds layout, adds an anti-reflection coating to its sapphire and comes on a steel bracelet, but AVI-8 UK lists its regular price at £338 or more. The Baldwin gives you most of the same mechanical package for less, provided you prefer leather.

If you want a pilot's watch for less and do not need a mechanical movement, the Rotary Apex100 Pilot RGS10000/04 has an RRP of £189 and adds a second time zone, but it is quartz. The Baldwin's case for itself is the automatic movement, the sapphire and the open case back.

One more point on price: AVI-8 runs frequent sales on its own site, so the £252 RRP is often not what people pay there. Compare like with like before you buy.

What is the catch?

There are three. The 15 mm case is tall, and 145 g on leather is heavy. The 50 m water resistance and pull-out crown rule out swimming. And the themed details, from the gauge-style hands to the seat-pattern stitching, are the point of the watch: if a story-led aviation design does not appeal, a plainer automatic will give you the same movement for similar money.

“A regular-production AVI-8 automatic with sapphire and an open case back, built around one pilot's cockpit.”
