Pixel Watch 5 Google's smarter brain in last year's body
The Pixel Watch 5 is Google's 2026 Wear OS smartwatch, and the 45 mm Wi-Fi model costs £399 at the RRP. It suits Android phone owners who want strong health tracking, a bright domed screen and Gemini on the wrist. The catch: the case, screen and battery rating are carried over from the Pixel Watch 4, so the upgrade is mostly speed and software.

The short version
Google has kept the shape, size and battery rating of last year's watch and spent its effort on a faster chip, double the storage and a new set of Health Guardian features. The question is whether that is enough at £399.
What is new about the Pixel Watch 5?
Google announced the Pixel Watch 5 on 12 August 2026 alongside the Pixel 11 phones, with sales starting on 20 August. The headline changes are inside. The chip is now a Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated with a Cortex-M55 co-processor, and storage doubles to 64 GB. Google says the watch is around 20 percent quicker than the one before it, with Gemini actions such as timers and workouts now handled on the device, even offline.
The other big addition is Health Guardian, a group of tools that includes Blood Pressure Trends, Insulin Resistance Trends, Sleep Breathing Quality and Breathing Emergency Detection. These were not live at launch. iDevice reports that they switched on from September and need about a month of data before showing meaningful trends, and that Breathing Emergency Detection is limited to selected European markets. Check availability in the UK before buying for any one of them.
There are also new colours. This version pairs a Matte Black aluminium case with the Obsidian Active Band, the most understated option in the range.
How big is it, and how will it wear?
The 45 mm case is 12.3 mm tall and weighs 36.7 g without the band, according to Google. Those figures are identical to the Pixel Watch 4, and uSwitch notes that the form factor has not changed at all. The domed Actua 360 display runs almost to the edge of the case, so it looks smaller on the wrist than the number suggests, and there are no lugs in the traditional sense.
The Active Band comes in two sizes in the box. Google says the small fits wrists of 150 to 185 mm and the large fits 165 to 215 mm. If your wrist sits below 150 mm, the 41 mm model at £369 is the better choice. Bands use Google's own twist-and-lock fitting, so third-party straps need the right adapter.
What does it run on, and how long does the battery last?
Google rates the 45 mm model at up to 40 hours with the always-on display and up to 72 hours in Battery Saver mode. That is the same figure as last year, despite the faster chip. uSwitch reports that the 40 hour estimate held up in its review, covering a couple of full days of notifications and workouts.
Charging is quick. Google quotes about 15 minutes to 50 percent, 30 minutes to 80 percent and an hour to full on the Quick Charge Dock. A short top-up while you shower is enough for most days. The watch runs Wear OS 7.0, has dual-frequency GPS and includes ECG, skin temperature, SpO2 and a skin conductance sensor for stress tracking.
How well is it built?
The housing is 100 percent recycled aluminium and the display sits under custom 3D Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Google rates it IP68 and 5 ATM, which means it can handle swimming to 50 m. The screen peaks at 3,000 nits, which matters for reading it in bright sunshine.
uSwitch points out that Google has kept the repairable design for the screen and battery that arrived with the Pixel Watch 4. That should help the watch last longer than earlier Pixel Watches, which were hard to fix. Google includes a two-year warranty in the UK.
Is it good value against its rivals?
At £399 for the 45 mm Wi-Fi model, the Pixel Watch 5 sits between its two closest rivals. The Samsung Galaxy Watch9 44 mm Bluetooth has an RRP of £379 on Samsung's UK store, while the Apple Watch Series 12 in 46 mm GPS form is £419 on Apple's UK store. The Apple Watch only works with an iPhone, so the real contest for Android owners is with Samsung.
The LTE version adds £100, taking the 45 mm model to £499. Tech Advisor noted before launch that the 41 mm Pixel Watch 5 costs £20 more than the 41 mm Pixel Watch 4, while the 45 mm price stays at £399. If you already own a Pixel Watch 4, the case for upgrading is thin, as Google has also brought some of the new watch faces and health features to the older model.
What is the catch?
The first catch is that this is a modest update. Same size, same screen, same battery rating. The second is that some headline health tools arrived after launch and vary by country. The third is compatibility: it needs an Android phone running Android 12 or newer, and will not work with an iPhone.
There is also a software point to watch. Tech Advisor has reported that owners of Pixel Watch models from the Pixel Watch 2 to the Pixel Watch 5 were posting on Reddit about sudden battery drain after an update. It appears to be a software issue rather than a hardware fault, but it is worth checking that Google has issued a fix.
“A faster brain in a familiar body: the Pixel Watch 5 is about what happens inside, not how it looks.”
