Moneta Moonphase a slim quartz dress watch that hides its battery

Yes, if you want a small, slim moonphase dress watch without the cost or upkeep of a mechanical one. The FC-206S3S6 puts a silver sunray dial, a coin-edge flange and a moonphase into a 37 mm, 7.65 mm steel case for an RRP of £995. The catch: it is quartz with no seconds hand, and the strap and buckle are basic for the money.

The short version

Frederique Constant has dressed a five-year-battery Ronda movement in the clothes of a mechanical moonphase, right down to dropping the ticking seconds hand. It is a clever trick, and a very wearable size.

What is new about the Classics Moneta Moonphase?

Frederique Constant launched the Classics Moneta Moonphase in September 2024 as a trio of quartz dress watches in silver, blue and black. This is the silver-dial FC-206S3S6, the most traditional of the three. The name comes from the flange, the ring between the dial and the crystal, which is milled like the edge of a coin. It does the job of a fluted bezel without making the case look busy.

The other unusual move is what is missing. There is no seconds hand. Frederique Constant's press material, quoted by Watchonista, says the idea is to erase the differences that usually separate mechanical watches from quartz ones. With no hand jumping once a second, nothing on the dial gives the battery away. The brand has since widened the family with a gold-tone version, a blue dial on a mesh bracelet and a black and gold edition, but the steel silver model is still the purest version of the idea.

How big is it, and how will it wear?

Small and slim, in the best dress-watch sense. Frederique Constant lists a 37 mm steel case that is 7.65 mm thick, and Fratello measured the lug to lug at 42 mm. That should slide under a shirt cuff with room to spare and sit neatly on most wrists, including slimmer ones. Fratello's Jorg Weppelink called it modest rather than too small on his larger wrist, while it looked more at home on a colleague's smaller one.

The coin-edge flange takes up some of the dial area, so the watch reads a little smaller than 37 mm might suggest. If you are used to 40 mm or larger, try one on before you commit. Water resistance is 50 m, so rain and hand washing are no concern, but this is not a swimming watch.

What movement does it use, and how accurate is it?

Inside is the FC-206, a quartz calibre that Fratello and UK retailer Beaverbrooks both identify as based on the Swiss Ronda 706. It has five jewels and Frederique Constant quotes a battery life of up to 60 months. The brand's own product page states accuracy to within 15 seconds a month, which is typical of a good Swiss quartz movement and far tighter than most mechanical dress watches at any price.

The display is hours, minutes and moonphase only. That keeps the dial calm, but it also means you cannot glance at it to check the watch is running. Setting the moonphase once is a small job, and with quartz you will not need to do it again every time the watch sits in a drawer for a few days, which is a real advantage over a mechanical moonphase.

How well is it built?

The specification is sensible for the price. The crystal is sapphire with an anti-reflective coating, the case is polished steel with a small onion crown, and the caseback is solid steel. The hour markers are faceted and applied, and T3 notes that the dauphine hands are hand-polished. The silver sunray dial uses black printing and a black ring around the moonphase aperture, with a blue moon disc for contrast.

The strap is dark brown calf leather with a crocodile-pattern embossing, fastened with a plain steel pin buckle. There is no deployant clasp, and at this price some buyers will want to upgrade the strap fairly soon.

Is it good value against its rivals?

The RRP is £995, the price authorised UK retailers Beaverbrooks and House of Watches both list, and T3 described it at launch as just under £1,000. The closest like-for-like rival is the Raymond Weil Toccata Classic 39 mm (5485-STC-00359), which Raymond Weil sells in the UK for £850. It is also Swiss quartz with a sapphire crystal and 50 m water resistance, and Raymond Weil lists it at 7.89 mm thick, but it has a seconds hand, Roman numerals and no moonphase. For £145 less you get a slightly larger, plainer watch.

Within Frederique Constant's own range, Oracle of Time reports the black and gold Moneta Moonphase at £1,095. The steel silver model is the better value of the two if you do not need the gold tone.

What is the catch?

You are paying close to £1,000 for a quartz watch. The finishing and design justify part of that, but a mechanical dress watch from the same shelf is not far away, and some buyers will feel that is where this money should go.

The missing seconds hand divides opinion too. Readers commenting on Fratello's introduction split between those who liked the quieter dial and those who called the lack of a seconds hand and a minute track deal-breakers. Others thought 37 mm is too small for them. If none of that bothers you, this is one of the more elegant ways to get a moonphase for under £1,000.

“It looks like a mechanical moonphase and runs like a quartz watch, which is exactly the point.”

Questions people ask

Is the Frederique Constant Moneta Moonphase automatic?

No. It uses the FC-206 quartz calibre, based on the Ronda 706, with a battery life of up to 60 months according to Frederique Constant.

Why does the Moneta Moonphase have no seconds hand?

Frederique Constant left it off on purpose so the dial does not reveal the quartz movement. Without a hand ticking once a second, it reads like a mechanical moonphase.

How big is the Frederique Constant Moneta Moonphase?

The case is 37 mm across and 7.65 mm thick, and Fratello measured the lug to lug at 42 mm. It is a compact, slim watch that suits smaller wrists well.

Is the Moneta Moonphase water resistant?

It is rated to 50 m, which covers rain and splashes. With a leather strap it is best kept away from swimming.
