Galaxy Watch9 40mm the smaller size gets the bigger battery bump

The Galaxy Watch9 40mm is Samsung's smaller 2026 Wear OS watch, £349 RRP in Bluetooth form, with a sapphire crystal, a 3,000 nit screen and a battery 20% larger than the Watch8 40mm's. It suits Android owners with slimmer wrists who want full health tracking in a 31.5 g case. The catch: Samsung still quotes only up to 40 hours per charge.

The short version

Most of the Watch9's upgrades are shared across both sizes, but the 40 mm model is where the battery grows most. That makes it the more interesting of the two, and the one to look at if larger smartwatches overwhelm your wrist.

What is new about the Galaxy Watch9 40mm?

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Watch9 alongside the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 at Galaxy Unpacked in London on 22 July 2026, and GSMArena lists it as released on 7 August. It comes in 40 mm and 44 mm sizes. We have already looked at the 44 mm Galaxy Watch9; this page covers the smaller model in Graphite with Bluetooth only.

The most useful change on the 40 mm is the battery. Samsung's UK newsroom says the 40 mm Watch9 has a 390 mAh cell, 20% more than the previous generation, and Samsung's spec notes confirm the comparison is with the 325 mAh Galaxy Watch8 40mm. The 44 mm model gains only 10 mAh, so the smaller watch gets by far the larger proportional upgrade.

Both sizes move to Qualcomm's Snapdragon Wear Elite platform, a penta-core chip running at up to 2.1 GHz, with 2 GB of memory and 32 GB of storage. Samsung also redesigned the Sport Band with an air pocket structure that it says sits more securely on the wrist, which matters because the sensors need steady skin contact overnight.

How big is it, and how will it wear?

Samsung lists the 40 mm model at 42.7 x 40.4 x 8.6 mm and 31.5 g. The 42.7 mm height is effectively its lug to lug length, which is very compact. That should suit wrists of around 14 to 16 cm that find most smartwatches top-heavy, and it will sit under a shirt cuff without trouble.

The screen is a 1.3 inch (34 mm) Super AMOLED at 438 x 438 pixels, smaller than the 44 mm model's 480 x 480 panel. Samsung quotes up to 3,000 nits of brightness and says the display sits under sapphire crystal, which should shrug off everyday scratches. The strap fixes with Samsung's Dynamic Lug System, so ordinary watch straps need an adaptor.

How long does the battery last?

Samsung's UK spec sheet gives the 40 mm model up to 40 hours with the always-on display off and up to 30 hours with it on. Those are the same headline figures Samsung gives for the 44 mm model, so the bigger cell seems to be spent keeping the small watch level with its larger sibling rather than pushing it past it.

That still matters. Our look at the Galaxy Watch8 40mm found reviewers struggling to get more than about a day and a half from it. If the extra 65 mAh delivers, the 40 mm Watch9 should cope better with a full day plus a night of sleep tracking. Plan on charging daily all the same.

What health and fitness tracking does it offer?

Samsung's Health app now groups everything into five pillars: Activity, Mindfulness, Nutrition, Sleep and Vitals. Vitals collects overnight heart rate, heart rate variability, respiratory rate, skin temperature and blood oxygen into one view. New this year are a Heart Health Score that combines activity, sleep, body composition and stress trends, a Fitness Index that judges whether your exercise volume suits you, and Daily Cardio Load for recovery.

The sensor list matches the 44 mm watch: optical and electrical heart sensors for ECG, bioelectrical impedance for body composition, skin temperature, a barometer, gyro and compass. GSMArena lists dual-frequency GPS (L1 and L5) for better accuracy among tall buildings.

How well is it built?

The case is aluminium, rated to 5 ATM under ISO 22810, plus IP68 and MIL-STD-810H. Samsung is clear that it suits pool and sea swimming but not diving or high-pressure water. Security updates are promised until 31 July 2031, which gives it a long useful life.

Is it good value against its rivals?

Samsung's UK store lists the 40 mm Bluetooth model at £349 and the LTE version at £399, against £379 for the 44 mm Bluetooth. Tech Advisor notes the range has risen by £30 over last year.

The obvious rival is Samsung's own Galaxy Watch8 40mm, now £269 on Samsung's UK store. It has the same size, thickness and screen, but the smaller battery and older chip. The £80 gap buys the new processor, the larger cell and this year's health features. If you want a tougher outdoor watch, the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 costs £649, almost twice as much.

What is the catch?

Battery life remains the weak point. Samsung's 40 hour figure is still well short of the multi-day running time some rivals offer. The watch also needs an Android phone, and Samsung's Health tools work best with a Samsung Galaxy phone, so check which features your handset supports. iPhone owners should look elsewhere.

“The smaller Watch9 gets the bigger battery upgrade, and finally keeps pace with its larger sibling.”
