1895 Tonneau Automatic Rotary's gold barrel case with sapphire

Buy the Rotary 1895 Tonneau Automatic if you want a small, properly old-fashioned dress watch with sapphire crystal and a Japanese automatic movement for under £300. It suits slim wrists and anyone who likes early 20th-century shapes. The catch is the Miyota 8215 inside: it is reliable but basic, with no hacking seconds and an audible rotor.

The short version

Rotary has gone back to its founding year for a 36 mm tonneau dress watch. The gold PVD case and guilloche dial look far dearer than the price; the movement is where the savings show.

What is the Rotary 1895 Tonneau Automatic?

The 1895 range is named after the year Rotary was founded, and the Tonneau Automatic is its most traditional men's watch. Rotary listed this version, reference RGS10060/01, on its UK site in March 2026. It pairs a 36 mm gold PVD stainless steel tonneau (barrel-shaped) case with a white guilloche dial, Roman numerals, blue hands, a date window and a brown leather strap. The RRP is £269, and Beaverbrooks lists it at the same price.

There are sister versions: a steel case on a black strap (RGS10061/01, £249), steel and gold PVD on a polished nine-link bracelet (RGB10047/01 at £289 and RGB10046/01 at £319), and a black-dial gold version (RGS10116/04, £269). The gold case with brown leather is the most overtly vintage of the set.

How big is it, and how will it wear?

Rotary quotes 36 mm across, 12 mm high and 46 mm from lug to lug. Those are small numbers by modern standards, but a tonneau case wears differently from a round one. The barrel shape fills more of the wrist top to bottom than its width suggests, so it should look larger than a 36 mm round watch. On a slim wrist it should look deliberate rather than undersized.

At 12 mm it is not thin for a dress watch, largely because of the automatic movement and the curved sapphire. It will slide under most shirt cuffs, but it will not disappear the way a quartz dress watch does. One owner review on Rotary's site says the strap made it less comfortable than an old bracelet watch, so budget for a softer strap if leather tends to bother you.

What movement does it use, and how accurate is it?

Rotary uses the Miyota 8215, the Citizen-made automatic that has powered affordable mechanical watches for decades. Beaverbrooks lists the calibre as 8215-6H. It is a simple, robust movement with a date, and it is easy and cheap to service. Rotary does not publish an accuracy or power reserve figure for this watch, so we have not quoted one.

What you give up is refinement. The 8215 does not hack (the seconds hand keeps running while you set the time), and its rotor is audible when you move your wrist. Through the exhibition caseback you will see a plain, functional movement rather than decorated bridges. None of that matters for wearing it to a wedding; it matters if you are buying it as your first serious automatic.

How well is it built?

The specification is strong for £269. Rotary lists 304L stainless steel under the gold PVD, a curved sapphire crystal, an exhibition caseback and 50 m water resistance. Sapphire at this price is still not a given: plenty of rivals use mineral glass. The guilloche dial adds texture that photographs well and should catch light on the wrist.

Rotary gives a two-year warranty, extendable to three if you register the watch within 90 days. The strap uses a standard buckle, and Beaverbrooks notes gold IP elements on the hardware to match the case.

Is it good value against its rivals?

Mostly, yes. The obvious alternative is the Orient Bambino 40.5 mm, at £284.99 on Orient UK. Its in-house F6724 movement hand-winds and hacks, but the case is larger at 40.5 mm, round rather than tonneau, and the domed crystal is mineral glass rather than sapphire. Seiko's nearest dress-adjacent automatic, the 5 Sports SNXS SRPK89, now costs £360 at Seiko UK and is a sportier watch altogether.

If you specifically want a shaped case, the field thins out fast under £300. That is the Rotary's real advantage: it offers a look normally found at two or three times the price, with sapphire on top.

What is the catch?

The movement, as above, and availability. At the time of writing Rotary's own site shows this reference as sold out, though it is still listed by UK retailers. The gold PVD can also wear through on the case edges after years of daily use, as plated finishes eventually do. And one owner, new to automatics, was caught out when the watch stopped after a day off the wrist: the advice was to wind it by hand before wearing, which is normal for any automatic that has run down.

“A shape you normally see at three times the price, with sapphire on top.”
