What is new about the Instinct 3 AMOLED?

The Instinct 3 is the third generation of Garmin's rugged, button-operated outdoor watch. Garmin announced it at CES on 6 January 2025, in Solar and AMOLED versions, alongside a cheaper Instinct E. This first look covers the 45 mm AMOLED model in black with a black band, Garmin part number 010-02936-00.

The headline change is the screen. Earlier Instincts used a dim, low-power memory-in-pixel display, which is excellent outdoors but flat and grey indoors. The AMOLED version swaps that for a bright colour panel, 1.2 inches (30 mm) across at 390 x 390 pixels. DC Rainmaker called it the biggest ticket item on the Instinct 3. The small secondary display window in the corner of older Instincts is gone on this version, though it survives on the Solar model.

The other big addition is a built-in LED torch. DC Rainmaker reports four white brightness levels and a red light, switched on by double-tapping the upper left button. TechRadar also lists a metal-reinforced bezel, Garmin Pay as standard and Garmin's morning report, which pulls sleep and HRV status into one screen.

How big is it, and how will it wear?

Garmin lists the 45 mm model at 45 x 45 x 14.9 mm and 53 g, and says it fits wrists from 137 to 204 mm around. That is thick for a 45 mm watch, because the case is built around a chunky protective bezel, and T3 found the Instinct 3 bulky enough to be uncomfortable in bed. The case is fibre-reinforced polymer, with a polymer and aluminium bezel, so it is light for its size.

The silicone band uses Garmin's 22 mm QuickFit fitting. If you have larger wrists or want the longest battery life, the 50 mm AMOLED model is the bigger option, at a higher price.

What does it track, and how long does the battery last?

The feature list is close to Garmin's running watches. Garmin lists multi-band GPS with SatIQ, training readiness, training status, HRV status, Body Battery, sleep coaching, Pulse Ox and daily suggested workouts. There is a compass and a barometric altitude sensor for hill walking, and TracBack to retrace your route. Connect IQ apps and watch faces are supported.

Garmin quotes up to 18 days in smartwatch mode, or 7 days with the screen always on. GPS-only tracking lasts up to 32 hours, and all satellite systems with multi-band up to 23 hours. A Max Battery GPS mode stretches to 68 hours, and Expedition mode to 16 days. For an AMOLED watch, those are strong numbers.

There are gaps. DC Rainmaker points out that there are no maps, only a breadcrumb trail, and there is no touchscreen even on the AMOLED version, which he called the biggest surprise. Garmin lists Bluetooth and ANT+ but no Wi-Fi, and music support is limited to controlling your phone.

How well is it built?

This is where the Instinct earns its place. Garmin rates it to 10 ATM, and TechRadar notes that it is built to the US military MIL-STD-810 toughness standard. The lens is chemically strengthened glass rather than sapphire, and it sits inside a raised bezel. Charging is through Garmin's own plug. T3 found GPS and heart rate tracking accurate for the kind of workouts people use Garmins for.

Is it good value against its rivals?

Garmin UK now lists the 45 mm AMOLED at £299.99. TechRadar reported a UK launch price of £389, so the RRP has fallen by almost £90. At the new price it lands at the top of the £100 to £300 band.

Within Garmin's range, the Instinct 3 Solar 45 mm costs the same £299.99. It gives up the bright screen but gains solar charging and much longer battery life. The Instinct E 45 mm is £219.99 on Garmin UK, but DC Rainmaker notes it has no torch. Outside Garmin, the Coros PACE 4 has a £229 RRP and a touchscreen AMOLED display, but it is a light running watch, not a tough outdoor one. T3 also named the Amazfit T-Rex 3 as better value for money.

What is the catch?

The catch is what Garmin left out. No maps, no touchscreen, no Wi-Fi and no music storage at £299.99 will put off anyone who wants a do-everything smartwatch. Owners on Garmin's forum also report software issues on recent firmware, including faster battery drain and sensor crashes overnight on the Instinct 3 Solar, though one owner on the same forum calls the AMOLED models more stable. If you want an AMOLED watch that shrugs off knocks and has a torch, it is a good buy at the new price. If you navigate off-trail, look at a mapping watch instead.

“It is a tough watch first and a smartwatch second, and at £299.99 that balance makes sense.”
