HDB002 Seiko's desert-sand field GMT keeps the 39.4 mm case
The Seiko 5 Sports Field GMT HDB002 is a 39.4 mm automatic field watch with a cream dial, an orange GMT hand and a 24-hour bezel, at a £410 RRP. It suits smaller wrists and anyone wanting a mechanical second time zone from a major brand under £450. The catch: a Hardlex crystal rather than sapphire, and a fairly tall 13.6 mm case.

The short version
Same case and calibre as the earlier Field GMTs, new earthy dial. The appeal is a genuine mechanical GMT at under 40 mm, from a brand any jeweller can service.
What is new about the Seiko 5 Sports Field GMT HDB002?
Seiko's 5 Sports Field GMT range already includes the polar-dial SSK059. For 2026, Seiko has added two earthier colours: the olive HDB001 ("Khaki Drill") and the cream HDB002 ("Desert Sand") covered here. Seiko's UK boutique lists both as new at an RRP of £410, and the HDB002 reached US retailers in August 2026.
The case and movement are unchanged. What is new is the dial: an ivory, grainy sandblasted surface that Seiko says is inspired by military outerwear, with black Arabic numerals and a bright orange GMT hand. A 13 to 24 hour scale sits inside the main hour track.
How big is it, and how will it wear?
Seiko quotes:
- Diameter: 39.4 mm.
- Thickness: 13.6 mm.
- Lug to lug: 47.9 mm.
- Lug width: 20 mm.
- Weight: 147 g on the bracelet.
A sub-48 mm lug to lug means this suits wrists from about 15 cm upwards without overhanging. The thickness is the figure to watch: 13.6 mm is fairly tall for a 39 mm field watch, mostly because of the GMT movement and the display caseback. Expect it to sit high under a tight cuff.
What movement does it use, and how accurate is it?
The calibre 4R34 is Seiko's own automatic GMT movement, with 24 jewels, hand winding, hacking seconds and roughly 41 hours of power reserve. Seiko's Irish boutique gives its accuracy as -35 to +45 seconds a day, which is a loose tolerance. Most examples run better than that, but Seiko only promises the published range.
The GMT hand is set independently of the local hour hand. Monochrome describes this as a caller, or office, GMT: ideal for following a second time zone from home, less convenient if you change time zones often, because moving the local hour means stepping through the GMT setting instead.
The bezel adds a third reading. Seiko Ireland's boutique says this is the first Seiko Field design with a bi-directional bezel, printed with a 24-hour scale, so you can rotate it to track a third zone against the GMT hand.
How well is it built?
- Crystal: curved Hardlex, Seiko's hardened mineral glass, not sapphire.
- Water resistance: 10 bar (100 m), with a screw-down see-through caseback.
- Magnetic resistance: 4,800 A/m.
- Lume: LumiBrite on the hands and indices.
- Bracelet: five-link stainless steel with a three-fold push-button clasp, 205 mm long.
The crown is not screw-down, but 100 m is plenty for swimming as long as you do not operate the crown in the water.
Is it good value against its rivals?
The obvious rival is Timex's Pan Am Waterbury Automatic GMT, which Timex UK sells for £550. It uses Seiko's NH34, a close relative of the 4R34 with the same 41-hour reserve and accuracy range, in a larger 41.5 mm case. You pay £140 more mainly for the Pan Am branding and the GMT-Master-style two-tone bezel.
If you only need a second time zone and do not mind quartz, Timex's Pan Am Waterbury GMT quartz model costs £290. For a mechanical GMT under £450 from a major brand, though, the HDB002 is hard to beat, especially for smaller wrists.
It also undercuts Seiko's own heritage GMT divers by a wide margin. Those offer more water resistance and sapphire, but the HDB002 gives you the same core function, a second and third time zone, in a lighter, more casual package that suits everyday wear.
What is the catch?
The Hardlex crystal is the main compromise: it resists knocks well but scratches more easily than sapphire, and at £410 some rivals now offer sapphire. The 4R34's accuracy tolerance is wide, and the thickness is noticeable on a watch this narrow. The cream dial also shows less contrast in low light than the black SSK059.
The HDB002 is too new for meaningful owner feedback on this colour, though it shares its case and movement with the earlier Field GMT models.
“A real mechanical GMT under 40 mm, with a bezel that turns it into three time zones.”

Questions people ask
Is the Seiko HDB002 a true GMT?
It is a caller, or office, GMT: the 24-hour hand is set independently while the local hour hand stays put. That suits tracking a second zone from home.
Can you swim with the Seiko 5 Sports Field GMT?
Yes. Seiko rates it to 10 bar (100 m). The crown is not screw-down, so do not operate it in the water.
How big is the HDB002?
Seiko quotes 39.4 mm across, 13.6 mm thick and 47.9 mm lug to lug, with 20 mm lugs.
HDB002 or the Pan Am x Timex Waterbury Automatic GMT?
The Seiko is smaller, rated to 100 m and £140 cheaper at £410. The Timex has a two-tone bezel and Pan Am branding for £550.
